The Blue (Rose) Hour

A few months ago, the Travelling Festival suggested that I thought about a show on David Lynch for the Los Angeles edition. In a few days, the dream of a concert with the music from all his films had been arisen, nourished by the admiration I have always had for his work. After months of intensive work, the dream has taken shape and IN MY HEAD will be created at the Théâtre National de Bretagne (TNB) in Rennes on the 17th.

In My Head - A film music tribute to David Lynch by Olivier MellanoTo interpret this dizzying rollercoaster repertoire of the highs of American music, from Roy Orbison to Samuel Barber, from Nina Simone to Nine Inch Nails, passing through Angelo Badalamenti’s world of course, a mutant quartet with Melaine Dalibert on keyboards, Régïs Boulard on drums, Joachim Florent on bass and myself on guitar, as well as a breathtaking string quartet made of Christelle Lassort and Mélie Fraisse on violins, Maëva Le Berre on cello, and again Joachim Florent on double bass, all of this peppered with Daniel Paboeuf saxophone, and surrounded by starry choirs. On voices, Kyrie Kristmanson will be aether and ice, Mona Soyoc fire and ember, and the crooner Gaspard Royant will be sugar and glamour.

With Pierre Nouvel and Sylvain Brossard, we have built a frame of shadows and light where the reflections of each film will appear. Finally, it is impossible to imagine this adventure without the comrade Pacôme Thiellement, Lynch exegete above all. The Rennes TNB is sold out but there are still a few tickets left for March 24th at the Théâtre du Châtelet.

L'Heure Bleue : immersion sonore et lumineuse à Paris (13e)There is also another big project that is newly born, at sunset in Paris 13th district: if you pass under the viaduct of the elevated metro connecting the Nationale and Chevaleret stations, precisely at the time when the sun passes behind the horizon, you might witness L’HEURE BLEUE, this suspended time when clarity flickers towards darkness, a time which has also become a light and sound installation designed by Jean-Hervé Vidal and for which I have written the music, a composition for 120 loudspeakers and a multitude of birds, spatialized with Thierry Coduys for Holophonix.
An urban artwork conceived as an appeasement and contemplative moment, as a balm for the end of the day.
The birds will be there each night, the music on Fridays and Saturdays, and for some more years yet.

There was the blue. Otherwise Jean-Clone by Julien Mellano will be on the 12th in Ifs, on the 14th in Pont-Audemer and L’Hôtel du Libre-Échange from Feydeau, staged by Stanislas Nordey, on the 4th and 5th in La Rochelle.

See you soon for what’s to come.

Olivier Mellano
